Necklace Jewelry Information

   The  necklace began with the human need for self-adornment.  The base of the neck is a great place on the human body to be embellished.  Here the face can be enhanced, the curves of the shoulders underlined and the bust given adornment.

Paleolithic remains from 30,000 B.C. indicate that some of the first necklaces were made of strings of perforated shells, carved bone, fish vertebrae, animal teeth, claws and stone beads that were polished and drilled.

Throughout history there have been many different styles and designs of the necklace depending mostly on contemporary fashion.

The antique and vintage necklaces that we have on our website include some of the following designs.  The Choker, lockets and long chains which were popular during the late 19^th century.  Long ribbon necklaces or pearls with tassels, called sautoirs.    Festoon necklaces, which made a lace-like pattern produced by a series of chains, the Dog-Collar necklace along with fringed necklaces.  Book chain necklaces with detachable pendant brooches,  gothic- style crosses, machine-stamped brass, lovely enamel and Bohemian glass.

The Lavaliere which is a type of  necklace that has a pendant suspended from a long chain or has 2 pendants attached to a chain with a center sliding motif; and others fashioned the lariat style where two pendants, overlapped hang in different lengths.  Filigree necklace which have ornamental, openwork lace patterns sometimes with camphor glass (frosted glass) medallions.  Beads were also popular in the 1920’s some were made of long strands of cut glass .  The flapper beads ended in beaded tassels.
